We have successfully limited our leadership Scorecard to twelve metrics, but we suspect several of these numbers are actually passive vanity metrics that look good but do not drive action when they go red. How do we audit our current Scorecard to identify and eliminate these passive passenger metrics?
A healthy leadership Scorecard requires constant curation. Over time, teams tend to accumulate passive metrics that always stay green but do not actually drive action or predict outcomes. These vanity metrics create a false sense of security and waste valuable time during your Level 10 Meeting™.
To audit your Scorecard, put every metric through the predictive test. Ask your team, if this number goes red, what specific operational bottleneck or financial drop will occur three to four weeks from now? If the answer is nothing, or if you cannot identify a direct consequence, you are tracking a passive metric that should be removed.
Another red flag is a metric that is always green but has no impact on your quarterly goals. If a department head is hitting their target every week, yet their department is struggling to meet its commitments, the metric is irrelevant. It is likely measuring busyness rather than impact.
Review each of your twelve numbers and ask if they prompt immediate action when they are missed. A true leading indicator demands an immediate adjustment or an Issue raised on your IDS® list. If a metric goes red and your team simply shrugs and moves on, erase it from your Scorecard. Replace it with an active, high-impact number that directly correlates with your operational health.
