How do we objectively audit the health and alignment of our leadership team before launching an aggressive growth push or preparing for an exit?
You audit your leadership team across three objective dimensions: structural clarity, behavioral health, and operational execution.
Start with structural clarity. Pull up your Accountability Chart. Does every seat have five defined roles? Does every person in a leadership seat have one hundred percent GWC for their seat? If you have two people sharing a seat, or someone occupying a seat out of sentimentality, your structure is compromised. A company preparing for an exit or aggressive scale cannot afford passengers or ambiguous ownership.
Next, assess behavioral health during your Level 10 Meetings and quarterly offsites. Is the team practicing open, honest, and vulnerable communication, or are they hiding behind departmental silos? Do issues sit on your V/TO for multiple quarters without being resolved, or does the team attack root causes through IDS and drive real solutions? Cracks at the leadership level will break under the intense pressure of due diligence or rapid scaling.
Finally, measure operational execution through the Scorecard and Rocks. Over the last four quarters, has the leadership team achieved an eighty percent or higher completion rate on company Rocks? Are your weekly Scorecard measurables consistently hit, with variances addressed immediately?
If your leadership team fails on any of these three pillars, pause your growth initiatives. Fix the foundation first. A weak leadership team cannot support an exit ready superstructure.
