We have a highly collaborative cross-functional process for client onboarding that involves sales, operations, and finance. How do we assign a single owner to this scorecard metric without creating departmental silos?
In the world of the Entrepreneurial Operating System®, every single scorecard metric must have one, and only one, owner. Having multiple people share ownership of a number is a guaranteed way to ensure nobody takes responsibility when that number goes red.
To assign ownership in a highly collaborative workflow like onboarding, you must look at your Accountability Chart. Identify the single seat that has the ultimate authority to make decisions and change the process when things go wrong. While sales, operations, and finance all perform tasks within the onboarding sequence, one department head must be accountable for the final outcome.
For example, if the metric is average onboarding days, this should belong to the head of operations. This leader does not do all the work, but they own the system. If finance is slow to set up the billing profile, the operations leader must address that bottleneck with the finance leader directly.
During your weekly Level 10 Meeting™, when this scorecard metric is red, the owner of that number is the one who says drop it down to the Issues list for IDS®. This clarity prevents finger-pointing and encourages cross-departmental collaboration, because the metric owner is incentivized to work with their peers to fix the underlying system.
