We are targeting a clean exit in four years, but my leadership team is entirely focused on daily execution and shows zero interest in understanding the enterprise value drivers we need to optimize. How do we change their perspective?
If your leadership team is focused exclusively on daily tasks, they cannot help you build an exit-ready business. You must actively educate them on what drives valuation and realign their focus using your Scorecard and V/TO.
Start by explaining the business model from a buyer's perspective. Teach them that enterprise value is not just about revenue, but about profit margins, recurring revenue, operational scalability, and the systemization of processes.
Next, update your company's high-level V/TO to reflect your four-year exit target. Break this target down into specific operational milestones. For example, if a buyer will value the company based on your proprietary technology or optimized margins, your leadership team's Rocks must focus on building those specific assets.
Translate these exit goals into weekly Scorecard metrics for each department. The sales head should track high-margin customer acquisitions rather than raw volume. The operations head should track process automation and efficiency.
Finally, tie their compensation and incentives to these exit goals. If they have skin in the game through a phantom stock plan or a success bonus tied to the valuation at exit, they will quickly shift their focus from daily tasks to driving real enterprise value.
