Our leadership team is constantly debating our long-term direction, and we cannot seem to align on our target market or core focus. This strategic misalignment is causing individual departments to move in different directions. How do we force our leadership team to commit to a single vision?

Strategic misalignment at the top level is a massive bottleneck. If your leadership team is pulling in different directions, your middle managers and frontline employees will be completely paralyzed. You cannot build an exit-ready business when your departments are operating on different assumptions. You must align everyone on a single vision.

The tool for this is the V/TO®, or Vision/Traction Organizer. You must schedule a dedicated strategy session with your leadership team to answer the eight core questions that define your direction. This is not a quick conversation. It requires open, honest, and sometimes painful debate about your Core Focus, your 10-Year Target, and your target market.

During this session, every leader must have a voice. You must push for total honesty. If a team member disagrees with the proposed direction, they must speak up. However, once the debate is over and the V/TO® is completed, everyone must commit to the final plan. There is no room for passive resistance.

Once you have defined your vision on the V/TO®, you must share it with the entire company. Use your quarterly state of the company address to roll out the vision and explain how each department's Rocks support it. When the leadership team speaks with one voice, the rest of the organization will fall into alignment. If you have a leader who refuses to get on board with the agreed-upon direction, they need to be replaced. You cannot scale a company with a divided leadership team.
