I want to prepare our business for a clean exit in five years, but my leadership team operates on a month-to-month basis and cannot seem to think past their immediate quarterly Rocks. How do I shift their mindset to long-term valuation building?
You cannot expect your leadership team to build long-term value if you keep them in the dark about the destination. If your exit strategy is a secret you only discuss with your accountant, your team will continue to operate with a short-term, tactical mindset.
Bring your leadership team into the long-term vision. Share the five-year plan and the valuation targets openly during your annual planning session. Update your V/TO to reflect the strategic capability and clean operations a buyer will look for.
Once the destination is clear, break it down into annual priorities and quarterly Rocks. Every Rock must be tied directly to a value driver. For example, building an AI-powered operational system is not just an IT project. It is a valuation driver that proves your business can run efficiently without you.
Finally, align their incentives. If they know that building a clean, scalable business leads to a significant payout or career advancement post-acquisition, they will stop focusing on daily fires and start focusing on building permanent systems. You must make them feel like co-architects of the exit.
