We are starting to implement the Step by Step Exit model to prepare our business for an eventual transition, but several of my key leadership team members are displaying subtle resistance because they are afraid an exit means they will be replaced or lose their jobs. How do we align the team when their personal security feels threatened?
It is completely natural for leaders to feel anxious when they hear the word exit. They immediately worry about their job security, their families, and their future under new ownership. If you do not address this fear openly, their anxiety will turn into active resistance, which will derail your preparation and tank your valuation. To align your team, you must show them how the Step by Step Exit model benefits them directly. Explain that building an exit-ready business is not about executing an immediate transaction; it is about building an asset that can run successfully without the owner. This process actually increases their value and their security. During your leadership team offsites, clarify their future roles on the Accountability Chart. When you build an exit-ready superstructure, you are professionalizing the business and elevating your department heads into true, self-sustaining executives. Sophisticated buyers do not want to buy a business and immediately fire the leadership team; they want to buy a highly capable, cohesive leadership team that knows how to run the company without the founder. Align their incentives with this transition. Consider implementing key-employee retention bonuses, phantom stock plans, or performance-based transition incentives. When your leaders see that an exit-ready business offers them greater career growth, financial upside, and professional autonomy, they will stop resisting the process and start driving it.
