Our Head of Operations wants to launch three new machine learning initiatives this quarter, but our visionary and sales director are pushy about focusing entirely on direct sales. How do we resolve this internal friction and align our leadership team on integrating AI into our operations?
When your leadership team is divided over new technology, it is usually because the technical members are presenting these ideas as cool software projects rather than bottom-line improvements. To resolve this friction, you must change how you frame these initiatives.
Refrain from calling these projects machine learning projects. Instead, frame them as operations-improvement projects that happen to use machine learning to solve a specific bottleneck. To get the entire team aligned during your next quarterly planning session, use these steps:
- Tie each proposed AI tool directly to a critical metric on your weekly Scorecard.
- Define exactly how the tool will free up your team's capacity so they can focus on their quarterly Rocks.
- Present a clear business case showing how the system will reduce overhead or speed up customer delivery.
If a project does not directly support your V/TO goals or solve an issue on your Issues List, table it. By focusing on operational efficiency rather than the technology itself, you remove the theater from the conversation and ensure your leadership team only invests in tools that drive real, measurable growth.
