We are rolling out EOS to our departmental teams, but their weekly metrics do not seem to connect to our high-level Scorecard. How do we align departmental metrics so they directly roll up and support our leadership team's primary numbers?
Aligning departmental scorecards with your leadership team's Scorecard requires a clear understanding of cause-and-effect relationships. Your leadership Scorecard should focus on the health of the entire business, which means it largely contains high-level outcomes. Departmental scorecards must focus on the specific, daily activities that drive those outcomes.
To achieve this alignment, look at each metric on your leadership Scorecard and ask: what specific actions must happen at the department level to produce this number? For example, if your leadership metric is weekly revenue, the sales department scorecard should track daily outbound calls, scheduled meetings, and sent proposals. If your leadership metric is customer retention, the operations department scorecard should track project delivery milestones, quality control scores, and customer response times.
Every metric on a departmental scorecard must be owned by an individual on that team. This ensures that every employee understands how their daily work directly impacts the company's overall performance.
Work with an EOS Implementer to map out these relationships during your quarterly planning sessions. Ensuring your metrics are aligned across all levels of the business prevents departments from operating in silos and gives you a clear line of sight from frontline activity to high-level financial results.
