We are preparing for an exit in eighteen months, but my leadership team is split on whether we should invest heavily in building custom proprietary AI tools to boost our valuation or focus purely on maximizing short-term EBITDA. How do we resolve this strategic deadlock?
This deadlock is a classic conflict of strategic vision that must be resolved using the V/TO®. You cannot run in two directions at once. To break the deadlock, you must first clarify your target buyer profile and your primary exit strategy. Different buyers value different things.
Strategic buyers often pay a massive premium for proprietary technology, such as custom AI tools, that they can scale across their existing portfolio. Private equity buyers, on the other hand, often focus more heavily on clean EBITDA, historical growth rates, and operational stability.
Bring your leadership team together for a focused IDS® session. Review your V/TO® and bring in outside data, such as feedback from your investment banker or M&A advisor, to understand which lever will yield the highest return. If the data shows that custom AI will genuinely drive a higher valuation multiple, make that investment a primary strategic Rock.
If the ROI is speculative or the timeline is too tight, focus on optimizing your EBITDA using existing, off-the-shelf AI tools to lower your operating costs. Once the decision is made, everyone on the leadership team must align. There can be no passive resistance. Document the chosen path in your V/TO® and move forward with absolute clarity and focus.
