I am a non-technical business owner running a traditional operating company. How can I personally test and validate whether an operational workflow can be automated with AI before handing it to my team as a Rock?
You do not need to learn Python, write code, or hire an expensive technology consultant to validate an operational AI workflow. In fact, delegating AI exploration to third-party tech consultants before you understand the operational mechanics usually produces expensive, useless theater.
As the owner, your job is to find cumbersome, friction-heavy tasks keeping your best employees trapped in low-value work. To test whether machine learning can handle the task, run a simple desktop validation test yourself:
Take five messy, real-world examples of an operational bottleneck in your business. This could be five unstructured customer intake emails, five convoluted vendor invoices, or five handwritten field technician daily logs. Open a standard commercial language model interface on your web browser. Paste the raw input directly into the chat window with three explicit operational rules: what data to extract, what format to standardize it into, and what edge cases to flag for human review.
Review the output. Did the model correctly structure the messy input in five seconds? Did it identify the billing discrepancy or project delay you were looking for? If the answer is yes, you have confirmed that the underlying logic works.
Now you have an operational improvement project that uses AI, not a speculative software experiment. Hand the validated logic to the seat on your Accountability Chart that owns the Core Process. Task them with turning that logic into a standard company workflow. You lead through operational clarity, not technical jargon.
