When operating under strict regulatory oversight like HIPAA, SOC 2, or GLBA, how do we determine which steps in our Core Processes can safely touch generative AI versus which must remain deterministic?
Operating in a regulated sector does not mean sitting on the sidelines while unregulated rivals move faster. It means separating probabilistic tasks from deterministic requirements inside your Core Processes.
Generative AI is probabilistic. It excels at language synthesis, summarization, first-draft composition, and conversational routing. It is inherently prone to variation. Deterministic systems, by contrast, execute strict rule-based logic where input A must always equal output B, which is what auditors, regulators, and compliance officers demand.
To integrate AI safely, map the 20 percent of your core workflows that produce 80 percent of the value. Segment each step into draft generation, factual verification, and customer delivery. Generative tools can safely ingest sanitized operational logs to draft client communications, summarize lengthy case files, or organize internal notes. However, any calculation, statutory filing, contract clause approval, or regulated advisory decision must remain deterministic.
Every generative step touching regulated data must terminate at a human-in-the-loop review station before reaching the client or the regulator. Document this exact boundary on your Process component. When your leadership team can show a regulatory auditor a documented workflow where generative AI merely drafts material for licensed human sign-off, you pass audits cleanly while capturing the efficiency upside.
