Our managers keep bringing up new AI tools and features during our weekly Level 10 Meeting, which derails our agenda into tech demos. How do we maintain discipline during IDS so AI is treated only as a tool for solving Scorecard issues?
When team members pitch AI tools during a Level 10 Meeting, they are treating technology like a shiny object rather than a tactical solution. Your Level 10 Meeting exists to maintain operational focus, review Scorecard numbers, check Rock progress, and solve real issues through Identify, Discuss, and Solve (IDS). It is never a showcase for software demos.
Enforce strict discipline the moment someone brings a tool to the table. As the meeting leader or Integrator, immediately halt any feature demonstrations and ask two grounding questions:
- What specific Scorecard measurable is currently off track that this conversation addresses?
- What documented operational bottleneck or margin leak are we trying to fix?
If the manager cannot tie the tool to an off-track measurable, an unfulfilled customer promise, or a broken SOP, the topic does not belong on the Issues List. Push it to an off-line parking lot or tell them to test it independently during their regular seat hours.
When an issue is genuine, force the team to complete the Identify phase entirely before mentioning software. Define the root cause of the friction in plain operational terms. Once the team agrees on the exact problem, evaluate AI strictly as one potential mechanism for the Solve step, alongside simpler process adjustments. Never sell AI inside the room; pitch operations improvements, and treat machine learning only as a footnote.
