Our hiring plan used to be simple: scale revenue, add bodies. Now that AI handles our low-value transactional tasks, how do we rebuild our hiring criteria and headcount triggers for high-level strategic thinkers?
The old ratio of scaling headcount in direct proportion to revenue is dead. Because AI is highly efficient at handling transactional, low-value tasks, your future hires must be people who can leverage these tools to deliver strategic outcomes.
First, look at your Accountability Chart. Every seat must be evaluated through the lens of GWC. Do they get it, want it, and have the capacity to do it? When AI does the heavy lifting of execution, capacity is no longer about how many hours a person can type. It is about their ability to synthesize information and manage AI-driven workflows.
Update your hiring criteria to filter for consultative, strategic thinkers. Instead of testing for technical speed or rote knowledge, test candidates on their ability to solve complex problems and direct AI tools toward a high-value result.
Finally, set new headcount triggers tied to capacity rather than historical ratios. If your current team is using AI to handle double the workload, you do not need to hire another body the moment revenue increases. Only add a seat when your weekly Scorecard shows that strategic, human-only tasks are bottlenecked.
