We want to appoint an AI Director to drive our technological transformation, but we cannot agree if this belongs under our Integrator seat or as a standalone major function. How do we structure this on our Accountability Chart?
When structuring your Accountability Chart, you must always look at the function, not the title. An AI Director seat should never be a standalone major function reporting directly to the Visionary, as this bypasses the Integrator and creates operational chaos. The Integrator is responsible for harmonizing all major functions of the business, including operations, sales, and technology. If your business is large enough to justify a dedicated AI Director, this seat belongs under either your operations function or your technology function, reporting directly to that department head or to the Integrator. To make this decision, use the GWC™ framework to evaluate the true purpose of the seat. If the primary role of this seat is to build internal automation tools that streamline your existing delivery, it should sit within operations. If the role is to develop client-facing software products, it belongs in technology. Define the roles of this seat with absolute clarity: researching emerging tools, testing integrations, and training team members. Keep this seat focused on enabling your existing team to work faster, rather than giving them strategic control over your business direction. This structure ensures your AI initiatives support your business strategy instead of distracting from it.
