We want to drive AI-powered efficiency across our operations to maximize valuation, but our existing leadership team lacks deep technical expertise. Do we need to hire a technical CTO to sit on our leadership team, or should we appoint an internal automation champion to drive this from within our existing seats?
To build an exit-ready, highly valuable company, you must leverage modern operations, but this does not mean you need to immediately hire an expensive Chief Technology Officer to sit on your leadership team. Doing so often bloats the team with a highly technical specialist who may not understand your overall business model or how to lead people.
Instead, look at your Accountability Chart and determine where process automation actually belongs. In an EOS® run company, technology and system efficiency are operational requirements, not isolated IT projects. The person running your operations seat should own the integration of modern tools into your workflows.
If your current operations director lacks technical expertise, you can assign an internal automation champion to support them, or bring in external resources to build the systems. However, the operational leader must still GWC™ the seat and take ultimate accountability for the results. They do not need to write code, but they must understand how automated processes leverage human capital to drive margin.
Do not create a new leadership seat unless there is a clear, long-term strategic need for that role to lead, manage, and hold people accountable at the highest level. Keep your leadership team lean and focused on execution, and treat tech tools as the engine that powers your documented processes.
