I want to implement AI agents to automate our client onboarding, but my leadership team is arguing over which department owns these tools and how it impacts their headcounts. How do we resolve this political battle?
This conflict is a classic example of empire-building and role confusion. When new technology like AI agents is introduced, leaders often worry about losing headcount, budget, or influence. You must resolve this by clarifying your Accountability Chart and focusing on what is best for the overall business, not individual departments.
First, define which seat on the Accountability Chart owns the technology. AI agents are tools to execute processes. If the AI agent is automating client onboarding, then the Head of Operations owns the delivery of that process, regardless of who built the software. The technology must serve the business function, not the other way around.
Second, reframe the conversation around capacity and efficiency. AI adoption is not about stripping leaders of their teams; it is about freeing up human capacity so your existing team can focus on higher-value tasks. Use your scorecard metrics to show how automating these workflows will improve your margins and prepare the company for a cleaner exit.
Stop the political arguing by forcing the team to IDS this issue through the lens of your V/TO. If your goal is scaling efficiently, then resisting automation to protect department headcount is a direct violation of your core values. Align the team on the overall outcome, assign clear ownership of the process, and execute.
