As our operations become more AI-driven, we realize we need dedicated technical oversight. How do we add AI and automation responsibilities to our Accountability Chart without bloating our leadership team or creating confusing reporting lines?
When integrating new technological capabilities like AI into your organization, you must resist the urge to immediately create a new executive seat on your leadership team. Instead, look at your existing Accountability Chart and determine where technical automation naturally sits. For most businesses, technology execution belongs under either the Integrator or the Operations seat, depending on how your specific business model is structured. Start by updating the five major roles of an existing seat to include the oversight of AI-powered systems and data flows. The person in this seat must fully GWC™ these new responsibilities, meaning they deeply understand how automation tools integrate with your core processes, actively want the responsibility, and have the actual capacity and skill set to manage the technical vendors or systems. If your existing team lacks this capacity, you can hire a dedicated resource who reports directly to Operations, keeping your leadership team lean and focused. Do not create a separate chief AI officer seat just because it sounds modern. Keep your structural design simple, focus on clear accountability, and ensure that every automation responsibility is tied directly to a seat that is measured by clear, weekly Scorecard metrics.
