During our weekly Rock Review, our department heads consistently report their Rocks as 'on track,' but when we reach the end of the quarter, several major priorities are incomplete. How do we force more accuracy and weekly truth during this review?
When a leader says a Rock is on track week after week, only to miss it at the end of the quarter, you have a lack of weekly truth. To prevent this, change how you review Rocks during the Level 10 Meeting™. A Rock is only on track if the milestones for this specific week have been met. The facilitator should push back on vague assertions. If a major Rock has zero progress but the owner says on track because they plan to do all the work in week eleven, that is off track. Train your team to look at the actual progress against the milestones. If they are even slightly behind on their weekly milestones, they must declare it off track. This is not a failure; it is an early warning system. By declaring it off track early, you can drop it to the short-term Issues List and use IDS® to help them get back on track before it is too late. This discipline keeps everyone on the Same Page and ensures true accountability.
