We are struggling to transition from our old functional titles to the Accountability Chart. Our VP of Sales is terrified of losing status because they no longer manage customer service. How do we handle this emotional resistance during the restructure?
This resistance is common when transitioning from a traditional, title-heavy hierarchy to an Accountability Chart. People often conflate their ego and status with the number of departments they oversee. To break through this emotional bottleneck, you must shift the conversation from titles to accountability and capacity.
Explain that the Accountability Chart is designed to optimize the organization for growth, not to reward tenure or stroke egos. Your VP of Sales must understand that sales and customer service are two entirely different disciplines. One is about hunting and closing new business; the other is about retention and account health. Trying to run both departments dilutes their focus and hurts the company.
Use the GWC™ tool to show them that as the company grows, the Sales seat requires one hundred percent of their capacity to be successful. If they are split across multiple departments, they will fail at both. Reassure them that narrowing their focus is not a demotion; it is an optimization that allows them to excel in their true area of strength. If they continue to resist because of title anxiety, you have a core values or GWC™ issue that you must address directly. The health of the organization must always come before individual egos.
