How do we handle a high-performing employee who refuses to accept the new Accountability Chart structure?
High performers who refuse to accept the Accountability Chart are the ultimate test of your leadership. In EOS®, we look at two dimensions: Core Values alignment and GWC™ (Get it, Want it, Capacity to do it). If this high performer is a culture fit but refuses to accept the structure of their seat, it is usually a GWC™ issue, a cognitive mismatch, or an ego issue.
You must address this immediately. Explain that the Accountability Chart is designed for the business, not the personalities. We build the right seats first, then place the right people in them.
Sit down with them and review the five roles of their seat. Ask them point-blank if they get it, want it, and have the capacity. Sometimes, bringing in assessments like the Predictive Index can help depersonalize the conversation by showing whether their natural behavioral drives fit the seat.
If they still refuse to operate within their defined boundaries or continue to bypass the Integrator, they are actively damaging your organizational health. You must hold the line. Keeping a disruptive high performer sends a message to the rest of your team that your structure is optional.
