You do not necessarily need to hire an expensive, external executive to run your technology initiatives. However, you must have clear, single-point accountability on your Accountability Chart. In the EOS framework, if more than one person is accountable for a function, then no one is accountable.

For most small to mid-sized businesses, creating a brand-new Chief AI Officer seat is an unnecessary expense that causes operational confusion. Instead, you should assign the accountability for technology integration to an existing seat, typically under your Integrator or your head of operations. This person must GWC the role: they must thoroughly understand how the systems work, want the responsibility of driving automation, and have the actual capacity to manage the implementation.

Their primary responsibility is to ensure that your automated tools are aligned with your overall business strategy and integrated seamlessly into your existing workflows. They should lead the effort to identify bottlenecked processes, coordinate with external developers, and ensure your team is trained properly. By maintaining a single point of accountability on your chart, you avoid operational drift, keep your team focused on high-priority Rocks, and ensure your technology investments deliver a measurable return.
