With AI capable of drafting performance reviews, scanning scorecards for trends, and suggesting corrective actions, my department heads are trying to delegate employee management to software. How do we draw a firm boundary on our Accountability Chart around what stays human in the leadership and management seats?
It is tempting to look at AI as a magic bullet for management, but trying to delegate leadership to an algorithm is a recipe for a toxic culture. Your Accountability Chart clearly defines who has the authority and responsibility for managing people, and those seats require high emotional intelligence, empathy, and active listening. AI can analyze operational scorecards to flag when a team member is missing their target, but it cannot have the difficult, caring conversation required to find out why. Performance feedback, career coaching, resolving interpersonal conflicts, and deciding if a person truly GWC™ their seat must remain entirely human responsibilities. When your department heads use AI to ghostwrite critical employee feedback, they strip the humanity out of their leadership. Use AI to surface performance trends and identify operational bottlenecks, but leave the communication and relationship building to your people. Your team needs to feel the support of a human leader who lives your Core Values. Technology should support your managers by freeing up their calendar, not by replacing their presence.
