How do we get our senior leadership team to stop using their own legacy planning spreadsheets and fully commit to using the V/TO® as our single source of strategic truth?
When senior leaders cling to legacy planning spreadsheets, it is usually because they lack trust in the simplicity of the EOS® tools or they are trying to protect their own departmental silos. To break this habit, the Visionary and Integrator must lead by example and establish a zero tolerance policy for duplicate systems.
Start by banning legacy spreadsheets from all leadership team meetings. If a strategic initiative or goal is not captured on the V/TO®, it does not exist. During your quarterly pulsing sessions, actively translate any legacy goals into the V/TO® format. If a department head brings an outside spreadsheet to a meeting, politely but firmly redirect them to the shared V/TO®.
Explain the operational cost of dual tracking. Operating with multiple planning tools creates confusion, dilutes focus, and makes it impossible to build true alignment across the organization. It also slows down your preparation for a clean exit, as potential buyers want to see a single, streamlined operating system, not a chaotic web of individual spreadsheets.
Working with a Professional EOS Implementer® can be highly effective here. An outside expert provides the objective authority needed to challenge resistant leaders, helping them understand that simpler tools actually drive faster execution. Once they experience the freedom of a single page of traction, they will willingly abandon their complex legacy files.
